Well, he looked really cool. Then I got him. Dammit.
He completely bucks the trend that Vehicons, especially Basic-sized
Vehicons, are cleverly designed and kick ass. Sure, his mode
look neat, but the transformation is so insultingly simple.
And the one thing I expected this toy to do, it doesn't. All I
wanted was for his weapons to be detachable. They actually
make up about half of the toy, so if he loses them he can't turn
into a jet any more. But still, the dude doesn't have any
hands! I mean, come on! All that happens is that his
weapons come together and the legs flip up. Boom.
Jet. It's a little upsetting. But let's break it down.
Robot Mode: It all comes down to the hands, and the fact that he
doesn't have any. That's really upsetting. I mean,
really. All of the other Vehicons, ALL of them, are more
intelligently designed. And because his hands are so huge
there's not a lot of posing options available. Granted, he
still looks badass, but then you pick him up. Guh.
Vehicle Mode: Not a very solid vehicle, as the "wings"
are the legs, and they don't hold in place incredibly tightly.
It's good enough, but there have been been mechanisms for locking
things in place. It also doesn't entirely streamline with the
vehicle form, which could have been incredibly easy to do. The
spark gimmick is really nice. And I know I've said it
elsewhere, but THIS is really the best one out of all o f
them. Anywhere else I said it, it was before I wrote
this. You push the spark forward, and the front part of the
vehicle splits open to form a claw. At the same time, the
missiles under the claw fire. You can open the claw without
firing the missiles, but you have to do so very carefully. And
what's better, the gimmick doesn't affect articulation at all.
It's bad design that does that. Both of these things form cool
weapons in Robot Mode, but since they aren't removable... well...
And that's that. I've had a long time to mull it over, and
his coolness can't stand up against the gimpiness. I'm sorry.
