| He's a freakin'
Headmaster!
Seriously, either of his Mini-Cons can serves as
his head. The engineering of the heads are VERY reminiscent
of the old Headmasters toys, but these Mini-Cons are actually
larger and more flexible than those old Headmasters ever
were. Not to mention the potentially interesting story
point. But, like everything else the TV show does, I expect
this will be disregarded or screwed up as well. Thank
Dreamwave for the comics, kids -- we're most likely going to see
some serious exploration of these ideas.
But let's not mince words -- this guy looks like
Beast Machines Thrust. His
vehicle mode is VERY similar, and his color scheme is almost
exactly the same. They also both have a "head" in
vehicle mode which has very distinctive eyes-as-headlights.
Nice. I like Thrust. I like this guy. Despite
not having legs, this guy has a pretty impressive range of
motion. Transforming the arms was a little strange at first,
but I got the hand of it. When I put it back into Vehicle
Mode I prefer not to flip the hands up as the instructions suggest
-- it just fits better if they stay down. The lack of a peg
to hold them in place is a little frustrating, but the joints are
so tight that it barely matters.
The Mini-Cons are an interesting oddity,
though. They are the first not to have an alternate vehicle
form, which means they are the first to fully beginning to take
advantage of the possibilities inherent in the Min-Con idea.
They turn into heads (again, I don't like the way the instructions
recommend transforming them), but they also combine together to
form a robot large enough to ride on the motorcycle and not appear
stupid. In fact, this reminds me very much of the Junkions
from G1. Except Sideways is only one guy. Pity, that.
Another improvement on the original
Headmasters? The heads SWIVEL.
This second wave of toys is starting to make me
smile a little. I have every other toy (except Laserbeak) in
the line at the moment, and these last two purchases of Sideways
and Smokescreen are honestly the best offerings, save Megatron and
the Mini-Con packs, to date. Not too much like G1, not too
unlike RiD. Far more solid than Beast Machines
Vehicons. Not as cool looking as the latter two, however.
Still, so far, my favorite Super-Con.
