| I worry. I really do. I
also miss the bunny ears. Sigh...
I want to mention something I forgot in the Demolishor
review -- these bubble cards are really extravagant. I mean,
they cover the entire face of the card and EVERTHING sticks
out. The toy, the logo, the little "card" (which
is made from really, really flimsy paper and not card stock --
sucky), the comic -- everything. It's kind of a pain to open
it all up, but it fits together nicely. It's almost a great
feat of engineering in and of itself. But on to the toy.
Vehicle Mode:
The first thing I have to say I like about this
guy is how there's a mechanism to spin the helicopter blades, a
feature sorely missing from many such toys. However, the
lower part (the bit that becomes the robot mode legs) doesn't
really lock down anywhere and flops around a lot in this
most. The wings move up and down, but that's because they're
the shoulders in Robot Mode and add to the articulation
somewhat. But here their movement is a little
annoying. Crumplezone can be attached to the front in this
mode, making a natural extension to the vehicle form. Good
design there. But where's the nice landing gear of Beast
Machines Jetstorm? The
solid design that just locks tightly into place in each
mode? That toy carried off being G1-ish while still carrying
over all the best features of the Beast Wars toy line. But I
digress...
Robot Mode:
The transformation is interesting, but really
easy. This guy rates at a 3, which is an
"advanced" transformation. I'm afraid to think of
what they consider to be a beginner. None of the three
Mini-Con sets even rates at a 1. If this is the second most
difficult transformation out there, I'm REALLY worried about the
rest of this toy line. Well, to his credit, Cyclonus makes a
good-looking robot. But that's it. His movement is
even more hindered than Demolishor's. And like Demolishor
there's absolutely no lateral movement on any of the limbs.
Even if there were, it wouldn't do this guy any good, at least in
the legs. I expected the helicoptor tail to stick out to
form a handle much like in Demolishor, but it folds down behind
the legs. Sure, this makes the form look nice, BUT it keeps
the legs from moving backwards any. He has a waist, but it
can't move because of the same reason. I guess that's
alright for a toy, but if this guy were an actual robot it'd make
running really hard. I do like the weapons built into his
arms, and unlike Demolishor both sides can fire, but like
Demolishor they only do when the Min-Con is attached. But
merely attaching it is what makes it fire. That's really
annoying.
But he DOES look good. He's the most G1
out of them all in terms of design and execution (even color
scheme, which strangely is appealing and very reminiscent of later
Decepticons of the line). If I didn't know better I'd think
he was a Target or Powermaster from that same time period.
Along with the design comes some of the innate charm that old
line. It's the only thing keeping his rating above a
4. But this isn't going to fly with me. After six
years of interesting transformations and clever design, this
throwback isn't going to impress anyone. There's very little
that's clever about him. But he's on the show, so kids are
going to buy it. Please don't.
